🔹 Congrats to all the winners of the CCC Open Championship pool! Physical prizes will be shipped out over the next week and congrats to Mariner Girl on winning the $500 prize!
🔹 Also, last week’s Comment Contest winner announced below.

Dear readers, One of your fellow CCC members just got back from a swing through some of the game’s most storied links. He came home with the usual things: a sunburn, a new appreciation for wind and a story he couldn’t stop thinking about on the flight home. He passed it to us. We’re passing it to you.
The course doesn’t matter, or rather it matters enough that we’ll let you guess. Picture a lighthouse standing watch over a par 4 that plays along the water, a ruined castle attributed to Robert the Bruce crumbling above one of the tees, an island visible offshore on a clear day that locals will tell you is actually a dormant volcano. If you know, you know. If you don’t, it’s still Scotland, which is the point.
During his round at this fabled course, he was told by his caddie that a U.S. Navy SEAL was recently on the tee of that seaside hole. He was taking in the beauty of the coastline waiting his turn on the tee box when he noticed something in the water that didn’t belong there. Not a seal, not a buoy. A person, and not swimming so much as losing a battle with the current.
Here is where the story stops being a golf story. The man dropped his clubs where he stood, which is a sentence that will mean something different to every golfer reading this. He ran for the shoreline, went in without pausing to remove anything he didn’t need to, and swam out into water that had already proven it was capable of taking a person under.
It turned out that a boat had capsized. A father and his son had gone into the water. The father had fought his way back to shore on his own, barely. The son hadn’t. He was caught in a current strong enough to turn a strong swimmer into someone who simply couldn’t get any closer to shore, and his father lay on the shoreline, exhausted and powerless to help. By the time our hero spotted him, the boy was well on his way to drowning.
The man reached him, turned him toward shore, and swam him back in. Somewhere on that course his clubs sat untouched in the grass while he toweled off and gave a statement to whoever shows up when something like this happens at a golf club.
The boy survived.
His training explained the sprint, the dive, the rescue itself. It didn’t explain how he was the only person on the property who happened to notice a head bobbing far enough offshore that most people wouldn’t have looked twice.
The club did the only thing a club can do with a story like that. They couldn’t buy him a boat or turn back the tide. So they made him a member. Honorary. Lifetime. No dues or green fees, ever. The closest thing a golf club has to a medal.
And so, dear readers, somewhere in Scotland there’s a membership committee that got to cast the easiest unanimous vote in its history, and a Navy SEAL who now has lifetime privileges at one of the greatest golf courses on earth because of the one round he never finished.

It seems this wasn’t an isolated incident. Thank you to everyone who commented, and especially to those that mentioned the time their club’s staff had someone pulling double-duty mixing in the world’s oldest profession with their server jobs. Bussiness and pleasure, it seems, do mix - at least in the world of private clubs.
Congrats to Rich B. for winning the comment contest. He wins a sleeve of LA GOLF balls for his effort. Vote and comment in the poll above for your chance to win next week!
