The Worst Hole-In-One Ever!

From Ace to Disgrace in an Instant

The Worst Hole In One Ever!

This story comes to us from a swanky East Coast country club with a very serious member-member match play tournament. Word of a hole-in-one made its way back to the clubhouse, but in a very untraditional way. Here’s the scoop as we heard it…

With the match coming down to the wire, both players teed off on an uphill par three and felt good about their shots. Unable to see where the balls landed, they walked together when Charles Montgomery IV told his opponent, “I think I may have caught it a little thin.” When they got up to the green they only saw one ball and so Montgomery announced he was probably long and in the back bunker.

Behind the bunker was a woodsy area with thick underbrush and not much room on a shot that went long. Mongomery’s thin shot could have easily sailed long where he would never find it, but when he got to the bunker he gleefully announced, “I found it! I guess I got lucky.”

As his opponent looked down and marked his ball Montgomery reached down into the sand and tossed a small pebble off to the side. “Good thing they changed the loose impediment rules,” he joked. Already exhausted from a day of golf with the overly chatty Montgomery, his opponent just grunted and motioned for him to take the shot.

Montgomery’s shot was lofted beautifully into the air and onto the green where it rolled to a stop six inches from the cup. His opponent begrudgingly stated, “Nice shot Chuck” and went to scoop the ball and concede the putt, but was stopped in his tracks when he noticed something from the corner of his eye…

There, in the cup, was an identical Titleist with a custom “CM IV” stamped on it. Charles Montgomery IV had made a hole-in-one… but didn’t realize it and so he cheated by dropping a ball in the bunker and pretending it was his tee shot!

Needless to say his opponent, who was no fan of Montgomery, reported the infraction to the club officials. The end result of his first career hole-in-one was having his membership revoked. He tried to join another club in town, but word had gotten out about his cheating and he quickly realized that he was blacklisted from all the other private clubs in the area.

Last anyone heard Charles Montgomery IV was slumming it at a local muni under an assumed name.

So remember dear readers, let this be a lesson to you. Before you go dropping a second ball and claiming to have found your shot, be sure to check the cup first!
