THE VAULT DOWNSTAIRS
There's an ultra-exclusive golf club most people will never see, built for a man who has spent his entire life playing to win at all costs.
As is CCC custom, we're leaving the name off the scorecard. But let's not pretend this is one of our more difficult mysteries. The clues include a lifetime of championships, a well-known taste for action and a private club that basically runs on it.
He's the kind of famous where you don't need to say a last name. And when it came time to build his own club, he didn't build a museum to his career. He built a playground for the one instinct that never retired: the need for something to be on the line.
Members don't publicize the place. Photos are scarce. Stories from inside arrive with the edges blurred. Part discretion, part pride and part understanding that a club like this works better running on rumors than facts.
The course itself isn't built around the ceremonial march of a conventional eighteen. It's built around options. Shorter loops, alternate sequences, enough flexibility to keep a match alive when the original bet stops being enough. It is not a course built for a peaceful Sunday. It is built for somebody to whom the scoreboard is the only thing that matters.
Then there's the part nobody can quite confirm and everybody keeps repeating anyway. Somewhere downstairs, the legend goes, there's a vault. Seven figures, allegedly. Nobody will say exactly where it is. Nobody will say who has the combination. And in every version of the story, one detail survives: there's enough inside to settle whatever happens on the course. No Venmo, no IOU, no "I'll get you next time." You win, you get paid, always before you leave the property.
But here's the thing. This man's already made more money than he could spend in three lifetimes. The vault, real or exaggerated, isn’t about the cash. It's about making sure the moment still means something. No waiting on a check. No grace period. You lose, you feel it before you've even changed your shoes.
So dear readers, if you ever find yourself inside those gates and the stakes start climbing, remember one thing. If you win, the house can settle.
Just make sure you can too.
Dear Caddie,
I can’t trust my driver anymore. We used to have such a great relationship. She would put the ball wherever I wanted on demand, but these days it’s like she’s not even listening to me anymore. When I want a draw, she hits a fade and vice-versa. And a straight ball? She hasn’t done that for me in months! I used to love her, but maybe it’s time to move on?
Hooking in Houston.
Dear Hooking,
Relationships with drivers are complicated, and other than putters there is no other club in your bag that will drive you crazy like a driver. But that’s also the spice of life, so don’t be too quick to give up on her. Try to remember the good times. Maybe she just needs a nice new headcover to remember that you care for her.
Having said that, if she still strays then it could be time to move on. Take her to a fitter and see if you can rekindle the flame. If that doesn’t work out, it’s probably time to hit the demo day circuit.
Dear Caddie,
I am pretty sure a guy in my Sunday foursome is cheating, but I haven’t caught him yet. He hasn’t lost a ball in months despite multiple trips into the woods and his handicap never seems to go down even after great rounds. Maybe it’s all in my head. What should I do?
Suspicious in Seattle
Dear Suspicious,
Where there is smoke, there’s usually fire, and golf is no exception. Having said that, you are going to need hard evidence before you make any accusations. The GHIN app is a good place to start. Check up on him and if you find he “forgot” to post more than one exceptional round, you’ll have him dead to rights.
POLL QUESTION
What’s the most dangerous sentence in a money game?
LAST WEEK’S POLL RESULTS
Have you ever voted in one of our polls?
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Yeah, I vote weekly - where's my free sleeve of LA GOLF balls?! (44)
🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ Once in a while, but I am too shy to comment (but today I will change!) (15)
⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ No, polls are stupid and I will comment and tell you why (1)
⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️⬜️ You have weekly polls? (5)
Thanks as always to everyone who voted. We love our readers, but we love those of you that take the time to vote just a little bit more. Why? It shows you care.
We got a lot of great comments last week, mostly saying not to worry about the prizes and encouraging us to keep up the stories. We appreciate all of them.
Still, that didn’t prevent us from picking a winner! Congrats to S.W. who we noticed has opened 94 of 94 emails since subscribing almost two years ago! S.W. simply commented, “Maybe this week I'll get lucky.” Well S.W. guess what? You did! A sleeve of LA GOLF balls will be on the way soon! Thanks for being such a loyal subscriber!
